Prototyping Tools for Web Developers

Method — Conceptual Prototyping

When you have some familiarity with the domain already, an early stage prototype can help jumpstart the conversation you want to have with research participants.

On this project, I worked closely with a designer, a developer, and a product manager to jointly produce a research prototype with just enough functionality to elicit concrete reactions from our target customers. Creating the prototype exposed our working assumptions about web developers' needs. Letting people play with the prototype definitively corrected our misperceptions!

Research Questions

When web developers produce prototypes as part of their process, what are their goals? What kind of prototypes would they produce more often, if they had better tools?

Design Insights

Reactions to the prototype gave us clear insights about web developers' motivations and values, as well as information about their current workflows and where our concept might fit in. To communicate these findings, I created a visual map of the design space to signify the relationships between current products and new product opportunities.
